January 27 - 30

Hello Parents/Guardians!

W.O.W (Words of the Week) Words:
No new words this week, please spend some time reviewing previous words.

Weekly Highlights:
  • In Science this week we learned about our 5 senses: smell, taste, touch, sight, and hearing.  We engaged in a variety of different experiments related to each of our senses.  We learned how each of our senses worked and discussed a little bit about how our senses keep us safe.  We watched a variety of videos about our 5 senses.  We will continue to learn more about our senses next week.
  • In Math this week we focused on number.  We learned the difference between a digit and a number. Here is a video that explains it well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBFxMndAUgw  We also practiced writing 2 digit numbers, counting forwards by 1s to 100, counting on from different numbers, finding errors in a counting sequence, and counting by 10s.  Here are some links to some skip counting by 10s videos we used this week:
  • We ended the week with our very first C.A.D (Community Activity Day) and it was so much fun!  Some of the activities students went to were: origami, art, sketching, cooking, lego, and plasticine.

Reminders:
Valentines:
As a grade 1 team, we will NOT be handing out Valentines cards in class.  Instead, the grade 1 students will be participating in kindness activities throughout the month of February.

Field Trips:
1. Kindness Walk:
Grade one students will be working on kindness over the next few weeks. We will be creating kindness cards to deliver throughout the communities around SVS. We are looking for volunteers on Wednesday February 12th from 2:30-3:45pm (dismissal) to help us deliver our cards.

2. Glenbow Museum:
Mrs. Cook and Ms. Pereria are looking for volunteers for our upcoming full day field trip on Tuesday February 25th to Glenbow Museum.  If you have your security clearance and would like to volunteer for this field trip please contact Kirsten Ledergerber at kcutress@hotmail.com.  Please watch the field trip forms which will be going home sometime next week.  The cost of the field trip is $20.00.  Please log into your Power School account to pay this fee.  If you have any issues with payment please contact the office at 403-777-6660.

Skating for P.E.
Students will be participating in skating lessons at the rink next to the school, weather permitting, Monday, Feb 10 – Wednesday, Feb 12. Each class will get two skating blocks. We are looking for any parents with security clearance to volunteer to help tie up skates and put on helmets. Volunteers will not be expected to go on the ice (unless they want to). Please contact Ms. Latham (ajlatham@cbe.ab.ca) if you are able to help.

Toys at school:
As a reminder, kids should not be bringing toys from home. They can become a distraction during learning time and can easily become lost.  Please also remind your child that we do not trade or give toys to our friends at school.  Thank you for your support.

School Updates:
There are many updates and changes happening at SVS please, look at the school website http://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/simonsvalley/Pages/default.aspx and our Administrations Blog https://ggdavidoff.blogspot.com/ to see the changes.

Community Skating:
Sandstone MacEwan Community Association has been collecting used skates for kids in the community who cannot afford to skate. If you are a family who would like to receive or who would like to donate skates, please contact info@sandstomemacewan.com.  As well, if you are interested, there is a family willing to do some sharpening and some intro lessons! What a great opportunity!

Ask Me About:
  1. Tell C.A.D. activity you did today and what you liked about it?
  2. Think about how you used your senses to keep you safe
  3. Read, read, read!!
